Frequently Asked Questions
How does JumpForTheCause.ca work?
JumpForTheCause.ca allows participants to fundraise for a charity of their choice by completing a tandem skydive. Participants set a fundraising goal (e.g., $1,000), which covers the jump cost and generates donations for their chosen cause. Once the goal is met, they complete their skydive at a partnered drop zone.
Is tandem skydiving safe?
Yes! Tandem skydiving has a strong safety record, with highly trained instructors and regularly maintained equipment. While all adventure sports carry some risk, drop zones in Canada follow strict regulations for safety.
Do I need any prior experience to do a tandem skydive?
No, tandem skydiving is designed for beginners. You’ll be securely harnessed to a certified tandem instructor who handles everything, from exit to landing. Before your jump, you’ll receive a safety briefing explaining the process.
What are the age and weight requirements for tandem skydiving in Canada?
The minimum age is typically 16 or 18, depending on the drop zone. If you’re under 18, you’ll need parental consent. Weight limits vary by location but usually range from 220 to 260 lbs (100-113 kg) for safety reasons. Some drop zones may allow heavier jumpers on a case-by-case basis.
How high will I jump from, and how long is freefall?
Most tandem skydives in Canada happen from 10,000 to 13,500 feet. Freefall lasts 30-60 seconds, depending on the altitude, followed by a 4-5 minute parachute descent.
How long does the entire skydiving experience take?
Plan for 3-5 hours at the drop zone. The jump itself lasts about 5-7 minutes, including freefall and parachute descent, but check-in, training, and waiting for your flight can take longer, especially on busy days.
What should I wear for my tandem skydive?
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and lace-up sneakers. Avoid sandals, boots, or anything loose. In cooler months, bring gloves and a light jacket. The drop zone may provide a jumpsuit to wear over your clothes.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my jump?
Skydiving is weather-dependent, and safety is always the priority. If conditions aren’t suitable (strong winds, low clouds, rain, or storms), your jump may be rescheduled. The drop zone will contact you if there are delays or changes.
Where will my skydive take place?
Your skydive will happen at a partnered drop zone in Canada. The exact location depends on your region, and you’ll be given details once you register.
How much do I need to raise to participate, and where does the money go?
Each jumper must raise a minimum amount (e.g., $500). Part of this covers the cost of your tandem skydive (typically around $400), and the remaining amount is donated to your selected charity. The more you raise, the greater the impact!
Do I have to pay anything upfront besides the deposit?
No, the only upfront cost is a non-refundable $50 deposit to reserve your spot. This deposit is refunded to the drop zone if you don’t show up. The rest of your jump cost is covered by the fundraising goal you reach.
How do donations work?
Donations are made through your personal fundraising page, and the funds go directly to the charity. JumpForTheCause.ca does not handle donation money directly.
Can I choose any charity to support?
You can choose from a list of approved charities or request approval for another registered Canadian charity. The charity must be a legitimate nonprofit organization recognized in Canada.
Can I skydive with friends or as part of a group?
Yes! Skydiving with friends or as a team makes the experience even better. Each person must register and fundraise separately, but you can jump on the same day if spots are available.
Where are my Goggles?!
Don’t panic, your instructor has them.
What does freefall feel like?
It feels more like floating than falling because of the strong wind resistance. There’s no roller-coaster drop sensation—just a smooth, exhilarating rush.
Can I breathe during freefall?
Yes! The rush of air may feel intense, but you can breathe normally through your nose and mouth. If you feel short of breath, try yelling—it helps regulate breathing.
What happens if the parachute doesn’t open?
Every tandem skydive includes a main parachute and a backup (reserve) parachute. Instructors are trained for emergencies, and modern parachutes are equipped with Automatic Activation Devices (AADs) that deploy the reserve parachute if needed.
What if I’m afraid of heights?
Surprisingly, many people with a fear of heights skydive without issues. The altitude is so high that the ground doesn’t appear close, making it feel less intimidating than standing on a tall building.
What happens if I raise more than my goal?
That’s amazing! Any funds beyond the goal go entirely to your chosen charity. The more you raise, the bigger the impact!
Can I change my skydive date after signing up?
Yes, but rescheduling depends on availability at the drop zone. If you need to change your date, contact us as soon as possible.
What happens if I don’t reach my fundraising goal?
If you don’t reach your goal, you have the option to pay the difference to meet the minimum fundraising requirement. Otherwise, your jump cannot proceed. Donations already made to the charity are non-refundable.
Can I bring my own camera or GoPro on the skydive?
No, for safety reasons. Small objects like cameras can become dangerous projectiles and interfere with your instructor’s equipment. However, professional video and photo packages are available for purchase at the drop zone.
